On October 1, 2019, Ukraine resumed commercial import of electricity from the Russian Federation.
According to Ukrayinska Pravda, this was reported to the Interfax-Ukraine agency by an operator of the transmission system of the National Power Company Ukrenergo.
The company recalled that in accordance with Art. 38 and 39 of the Law of Ukraine «On the Electricity Market,« the transmission system operator is required to provide non-discriminatory access to the cross section.
According to the agency, on October 1, the import of electricity from the Russian Federation with a stable capacity of 100 MW was carried out by United Energy LLC.
In 2019, United Energy won a few gas supply contracts with Dniproazot JSC (a part of the “Privat group” of Ihor Kolomoisky), and in August-September 2019, the company competed in the tender for the supply of electricity to the Surkis brothers’ Prykarpattyaoblenergo facilities.
As reported, on September 18, the Verkhovna Rada approved the amendment of MP Andriy Gerus to the Law of Ukraine "On the Electricity Market", enabling to buy electricity under bilateral agreements from countries that are not members of the European Energy Community.
Gerus explained that his amendments supposed to improve competition in the country's electricity market, that in its turn could lead to lower electricity prices for industrial consumers.
Electrical energy was imported to Ukraine from Russia for the last time in 2015 under an agreement between the State Foreign Trade Company Ukrinterenergo and Inter RAO OJSC in order to transfer it further to the occupied Crimea.
The contract was valid throughout 2015 and provided a uniform supply schedule of electric energy up to 1.5 GW. The contract was not prolonged.
In 2014, Ukraine imported 178 million kWh of electricity from Russia, in 2015 — 2.295 billion kWh.
In recent years, there was no commercial import of electricity from the Russian Federation to Ukraine, there were only small technological flows associated with the parallel operation of the Ukrainian Unified Energy System with the energy systems of neighbouring countries (according to the contracts of state company Energorynok).
